Terrace Living Outdoor Furniture

Terrace Living Outdoor Furniture

Tables and chairs

  • Wooden furniture such as oak brings character and a traditional look into the garden. It can be susceptible to moisture and sunlight, so treat it with protective oil or varnish and cover it up or put away during winter.
  • More expensive teak is naturally resistant to the elements so won't require added protection.
  • Plastic is cheaper and won't be affected by rot, mould or rust, though it can fade if left in the sun for a long time.
  • A quick wipe with a damp cloth is all that's needed to keep it clean.
  • One other option is synthetic rattan; it withstands the elements and has the look of natural rattan without the price tag.
  •  Metal is exceptionally strong and durable – choose wrought iron for a classic style and aluminium or steel for a modern feel. It can be cold and hard to sit on, so add cushions or pads for comfort. An anti-corrosive coating will protect it from the rain.

Measure up the space before you buy, making sure there's enough room to sit comfortably without being crammed in

Teak is a good choice for outdoor use, as its high oil content makes it more resistant to rain, rot and insects. Roscana teak four-seater dining set, £396, B&Q (Diy.com)

    Small seating

    • Stackable, lightweight garden chairs are easy to store and perfect for impromptu seating arrangements.
    • A neat two-seater bench is ideal where space is limited. Position to take in a particular view, under an arbour or by the back door.
    • A rocking or swinging chair or bench will relax and soothe you. Rocking chairs will need a firm base and swinging chairs a secure beam to fix them to.
    • Refresh wooden chairs and all outdoor woods with a coat of garden paint, which will give extra protection from the elements

Refresh wooden chairs by painting them in a vibrant colour such as Cuprinol's Garden Shades Wood Paint, £10 a litre

      Loungers

      • Look for adjustable designs that give the option of sitting or lying down.
      • Removable seat cushions can be kept in the shed or garage if rain is forecast, while a washable cover will stay clean for longer.
      • Choose a style that can fold away easily during the winter months when not in use.
      • You'll need quite a large patio to comfortably fit in one or two loungers
Higold Palace sun lounger, Sweetpea & Willow
There's no need to worry about laborious furniture care when your lounger is made from UV-resistant, pest-and fungus-free rattan. Higold Palace sun lounger, £1,025, Sweetpea & Willow

        Smart chairs

        • Substantial seating needs to be weatherproof as it's tricky to move around.
        • If you're going to keep the seating outside in summer look for weather-resistant cushion covers and quick-dry foam pads.
        • Darker or patterned fabrics won't show marks as easily as pale ones.
        • If your budget is tight, start with one or two modular sections, then build up with a two-seater sofa, corner unit and coffee table.
        • Make sure there's plenty of room for manoeuvre. Modular seating is best used on a patio, decking or terrace rather than the lawn, as it tends to be heavy and can be difficult to move.
        • The addition of a glass-topped coffee table will create an informal low-level dining surface for alfresco meals.

If you have a conservatory or garden room, choose chairs that can be used indoors as well as out

          Casual chairs

          • Deckchairs and stackable or foldable designs are great for small gardens or balconies as they can be easily tucked away after use.
          • Hanging chairs and hammocks create a wonderful laidback look that's perfect for chilling out with a good book.
          • Children will love the flexibility of giant outdoor beanbags and floor cushions to laze around on.

            Awnings

            • The right sunshade can really elevate your outdoor space, providing a lovely area for dining or relaxing. Some designs come with integrated heating to keep you warm in cooler temperatures as well as lighting for evening entertaining.
            • The key is to choose the correct size, as this will affect the area of shade it provides – especially as the sun moves around throughout the day. A made-to-measure supplier will carry out a technical survey so it's just right.
            • Awnings should be made from water-resistant fabrics that are specially treated to help prevent fading and weathering.
            • When not in use, they can be rolled neatly away into a wall-mounted cassette.
            • Some designs come with an intelligent weather sensor that automatically opens the awning when the sun comes out and closes if it's windy.

Make sure the awning is UV-rated so you can be confident it will provide proper protection from the sun's rays

              Base Plus awning, from Luxaflex
Operate your shade at the touch of a button with a remote control or wall switch and get the seaside feel with a striking striped design. Base Plus awning, from £1,065, Luxaflex

              Small solutions

              • For value for money, choose an easily portable shade that can be taken with you to the park or beach.
              • Make it fun for children with tents, covered seating, pods and hanging cocoon-style seats.
              • Go for white or pale tones as dark colours will absorb the sun more easily making it hotter underneath; look for UV-resistant fabrics for added protection.
              • If you're planning a big event such as a party, wedding or anniversary, a gazebo is a good investment.
              • Consider outdoor heaters too, to make sure you can party long into the evening.
              • Parasols can offer a quick and inexpensive way to create shade as the sun moves around the garden.

Check with the manufacturer whether you'll need to apply a waterproofing treatment after a few years to maintain the finish

                Summerhouses

                • Choose a site that allows you to enjoy the garden.
                • Check whether the summerhouse comes as self-assembly or if the company offers a build service, which will cost extra.
                • Make sure the ground is prepared before you install the summerhouse on top.
                • Link it up with electricity and heating and it could also become a home office, hobby room or workshop.
